Since the earliest stages in the development of the Voisey’s Bay project, we have been working with government, Aboriginal communities and other stakeholders to ensure that environmental considerations are integrated and accounted for in all aspects of the project. In 2003, VBNC’s environmental protection and planning efforts focussed primarily on the construction site in Labrador, where the construction program is well underway. At Argentia, baseline environmental studies were initiated to prepare for the environmental assessment of the commercial processing facility that VBNC will begin constructing in 2008. Vale also conducted an Environmental Due Diligence Audit of remediation work of the Argentia site, which was occupied by the US Military as an airbase from 1941-1972.
The environmental management and monitoring of the Labrador site involves a high level of Aboriginal participation and extends to virtually all aspects of the environmental management process. We incorporate the traditional knowledge of Aboriginal people in the ongoing management and monitoring of our daily environmental performance.
